Good and affordable steak. Empire Steak’s on the sixth spot of Spot.ph’s Top Ten Steaks under Php500. But, it’s not just their steak that would make me come back. They serve delicious Truffled Mashed Potato that became the highlight of my first visit to this restaurant.

Their most expensive steak is just Php499, the King Kong’s Steak. That’s double steak with sauteed onions, two sunny side up eggs, bacon, stir-fried vegetables, potato chips, and rice.

It’s not the usual steak cooked with salt and pepper. The steak has been tweaked to adjust to the Filipino taste, making it saltier and slightly sweeter. Restaurant owner Chef Conrad Legaspi said he glazed the meat a bit and used soy sauce. That made the steak perfect with a cup of rice. The vegetables on the side added a teppanyaki touch, that’s usually the Japanese dish with fried meat and vegetables on a hot steel plate. I think this dish can serve two persons, just have an extra serving of rice.

You can also try their Solo Steak. That’s US rib-eye with rice and gravy or barbecue sauce.

If there was one thing that was gastronomically unforgettable during this visit was the Truffled Mashed Potato. It was my first time to try this. One serving wasn’t enough. It’s mashed potato with truffle oil. It’s so good. The truffle oil just gave this a whole different character.

Chef Conrad described Empire Steak as an upgraded hole in the wall. It can fit 20 persons in the air-conditioned area of the restaurant, and about 10 outside. It’s decorated with pictures of New York, and of course, the Empire State Building which inspired the name of the restaurant, Empire Steak.

He said his stay in New York opened his eyes to gourmet food at affordable rates along the streets. He wanted to bring this experience back home and adjusted the taste to suit the Filipino market. His usual guests are young professionals.
